Overview
Following its inaugural edition held in February 2023 at Wacoal Study Hall Kyoto, the in-house project "A Piece of Gold" was presented at Shibuya Hikarie 8 / CUBE 1, 2, 3. Anyhow has led the overall direction and design of the exhibition. The project explores the role and significance of design through the materiality of gold in jewellery.
The exhibition featured approximately 70 gold works by 20 designers from diverse backgrounds across Japan and abroad, including Simon Taylor, founder of the London-based creative collective TOMATO; Louis Tamlyn, a former jewellery designer at Maison Margiela now based in Paris; and Kensaku Oshiro, a designer based in Milan. In collaboration with jewellery brand ATAKA, antique jewellery shop CAFE CAFE MARKET, and jewellery manufacturer KUWAYAMA Corporation, the exhibition also presented a range of content examining the material, cultural, and historical significance of gold.
Rather than positioning gold solely as decoration or investment, the exhibition reconsidered its value as a finite resource and explored the role of design within that context. At a time of rising gold prices, it raised the question of how designers engage with this precious material and express their creativity through it.
